Rum’s Eg is located in Romsey’s Bell Street, a not for profit it offers an outlet for professional artists from across the New Forest, Test Valley and the South Coast.

We run a number of events in the community promoting wellbeing through an appreciation of the arts. We open our 2017 season with the appropriately named -
“New Year, New Work, New Rum’s Eg” – 12th January to 25th February
Work by some the gallery’s most popular artists & makers of the last four years including Maureen Davies, Paul Jenkins, Pete Gilbert, Ali Lindley, Emma Barker, Barry Fry and Victoria Williams plus some exciting new Artists and Makers including two from the Isle of Wight: Jane Cox with her bold, decorative and functional earthenware designs and a taster of Susie Prangnell’s semi-abstract pastel paintings There will also be some new furniture pieces from Damian Head and David Stephenson Running concurrently with……
“Kites: The Art of Natural Materials”
John Browning is passionate about making and flying kites and has spent years perfecting his intricate designs made from leaves and other plant fibres – and they can all fly! Meet John in the gallery on Thursday 12th January from 2 to 5pm.
January 2017 Workshops and Courses at Rum’s Eg
The workshops take place in our spacious 2nd floor Leckford Art Studio and the new season opens with: Kate Measham on 15th January and “Size Matters – Drawing Large”, Kate will be inspiring and encouraging participants to get creative with the size in their artwork and open their eyes to exciting new possibilities.
Fiona Forbes is returning with “Waterbased Oils with a Palette Knife” on 18th January to help you create vibrant landscape and floral paintings with user-friendly water-mixable oils. Tibor Eperjessy is back for another popular “Introduction to Leathercrafts” three-day course starting on 22nd January.
Cathy McCarthy is returning for another “Make your Own Jewellery” workshop on 25th January to help you create your own silver, copper or brass pieces.
Rachel Evans offers an “Introduction to Modern Mosaics” on 29th January an exploration of the wonderful world of mosaics using her direct method to make a plaque to your own design.
The workshop programme continues all year to include:
“Making a Ceramic Sheep”, “Introduction to Photography” and “Portrait Photography”, “Bookbinding”, “Creative Writing”, “Creating in Clay”, “Sculptural Needle-felting”, “Japanese Calligraphy”, “Basket-making” and “Stone Carving”.

Community Arts Projects
One of the highlights of the 2017 programme is an exciting art & science project with artists working with local schools to research, design and construct a “Microbial World” an art installation which will be part of a sculpture exhibition in the grounds of Romsey Abbey as part of The Romsey Festival in July. As part of the community ethos Rum’s Eg will also be working with local medical practices to run some pilot “Prescription Arts” sessions of painting or singing for people suffering from stress, anxiety, loneliness or depression – please check the programme or website for more information about these ‘Arts for Wellbeing’ projects which we will be developing throughout 2017.
The cafe on the first floor is a favourite destination for Romsey visitors and residents alike, the menu offers seasonal, locally sourced produce, warming homemade soups, hot and cold lunch dishes, brunch special. We offer a fantastic selection of delicious homemade cakes including salted caramel brownies, pecan butter tarts and clementine and orange cake.
From 12th to 31st January visit the cafe between 3-4pm and enjoy a tea or coffee and slice of cake for only £3.95. (vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options are usually available so please ask if you have specific dietary requirements.)

The New Year starts with a “January Sale” from 3rd to 8th January with reductions on retail stock and some of the Artists’ work. The gallery will then be closed from 9th – 11th January for redecoration, opening on Thursday 12th January.
